Metro Noord/Zuidlijn, Amsterdam

Paintings

2011 - 2018

Amsterdam

"In 2015 Ton Leenarts painted several Metro stations of the new to built Metro line in Amsterdam while it was still under construction. In his paintings there are no people but big empty spaces and some containers plus building materials that lay scattered around.

One of his paintings shows an immense large open hall, which is commonly known as the Cathedral, and looking at Leenarts painting it is obvious why this is. The high ceiling the blue geometrical patterns and the large red pillars all help to give the impression of a medieval cathedralic building. Because of the quiet atmosphere and the imposing play of lines, the painting tends to make an almost mythical impression. This painting "The Cathedral" is now part of the permanent collection of the Amsterdam museum."
